WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sounded quite pleased on Tuesday that former President Bill Clinton was in his home state of Kentucky stumping for his likely Democratic opponent, saying every time Clinton came to town in an election year, things seemed to work out pretty well for McConnell.

“I welcome him back,” McConnell said at a press conference. “The last time he ran in 1996, he eked out a narrow victory in Kentucky, while I beat the current governor by 160,000 votes and 10 points. In 2008, both Bill and Hillary Clinton came to town, including the day before the election — and I won by 100,000 votes.”

“So I welcome President Clinton back to Kentucky,” McConnell said. “Every time he’s come, it’s been really good for me.”

Clinton appeared at a fundraiser for Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in Louisville Tuesday. Grimes is the expected Democratic nominee. McConnell will face her in a general election if he bests his primary opponent, businessman Matt Bevin.
