A Norwegian skier was out for a day on the mountains with his family when they happened to stumble across an incredibly rare display of nature’s most powerful elements devouring a nearby tree.

Steinar Midtskogen captured the rare phenomenon known as “electrical arcing,” which occurs when electric currents pass across two conductors via air or gas, which then ionize and create an amazing visual display of light and fire.

It looks as if the event may have been caused by the explosion of a nearby power transformer in the Norefjell mountain range, where Midtskogen was skiing with his children.

The skier uploaded the video to his YouTube account in January.
