Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Kweku Mandela, partied it up at Dupont hotspot KABIN last night to celebrate his birthday, The Mirror has learned. He was spotted in a group of six – two women from his production team and three men. The alpine-inspired lounge sent a cake to Mandela’s VIP table in honor of his birthday. His friends made a toast with champagne and sparklers.
Mandela, a filmmaker, is in town to promote his new movie Beyond Right & Wrong. He attended a private screening of the film with BET yesterday.
On a sidenote: This isn’t the Mandela grandson who was charged earlier in the year with assault in a road rage incident. That would be Mandla Mandela, who allegedly pulled a weapon on a teacher who had crashed into the car of one of his friends. The incident went down in South Africa. His trial is set for May.
Turns out the reason for all this special treatment is that Kweku Mandela hobnobs with local entrepreneurs Charlie Paret and Vinoda Basnayake. Basnayake is a lobbyist and part owner of Kabin. Charlie is a local developer who worked with Mandela on his film’s screening at Sundance, where they first became friends. Paret and Vinoda took Mandela to Kabin and sent him the cake.
KABIN is apparently the new D.C. place to be. This past Friday, Kings of Leon showed up.
