At first I thought, who’s he trying to be, Walter White?

Ex-Mediaite writer Tommy Christopher, now at the liberal startup The Daily Banter, likes to be sensitive in his writing. Especially toward minorities. Remember all that passionate Trayvon Martin coverage? Some headlines in case you missed them: “How the Conservative Media Has Been Covering Trayvon Martin” and “Where is Trayvon Martin’s Rolling Stone Cover?” This won’t surprise anyone, but he’s the kind of reporter who could find racial discrepancies in a bowl of oatmeal (no offense to the oatmeal).

So when Tommy went on Roland Martin‘s morning show Thursday on TV One, a network that caters to an African American audience and runs reruns of Good Times, The Jeffersons, What’s Happening and A Different World all day long, what does he do? He dons his best pimp wear. Tres chic black, he must’ve thought when getting dressing this morning and topping it all off with this pimpilicious hat.

“I mean, Tommy goes on a black news show on a black TV channel and tries to dress black. WTF? Isn’t that a little uncomfortably patronizing?” a Washington journalist wondered, preferring to speak on condition of anonymity.

tommyHe probably wasn’t trying to patronizing. Tommy being Tommy, this is not the first time that he has made unusual fashion choices. In 2010, just before his heart attack, he was named worst dressed White House correspondent and got a free Saks Fifth Avenue makeover that included a haircut, shave and manicure. In it, he went from looking like a hairy hobo in a full-length leather coat to looking like this dog that was recently vigorously scrubbed, groomed and featured in the Daily Mail. “I feel like a million bucks,” he said at the time as a flamboyant stylist fussed over him. “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.”

And just last week Tommy shot a crotch selfie in an attempt to reveal what he wore from the waist down to a White House briefing because he didn’t have time to change his entire outfit.

Today’s outfit shows just how far Tommy has come from his makeover to gangsta black chic. It went over so well that Tommy wore the hat again Thursday night in an appearance on the Thom Hartmann show.

As you can see above, we’ve photoshopped him into Martin Lawrence‘s TV family. He fits right in!
