Comedian John Pinette dies at 50

Actor and standup comedian John Pinette died Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa. of natural causes, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Pinette, who played the character responsible for getting the “Seinfeld” gang thrown in jail in the series finale, suffered from liver and heart disease.

He frequently used his large size as a punchline in his standup comedy, but had lost nearly half of his body weight by the time of his death.

Pinette also played Edna Turnblad in the 2006 Broadway production of “Hairspray” (the role played by John Travolta in the movie) and his standup special, “I’m Starving,” aired on Comedy Central in 2011.
