BuzzFeed is bailing on the White House Correspondents’ Dinner once again this year to host their own cooler “Bowties & Burgers” party with Facebook at the Jack Rose Saloon in Washington’s Adams Morgan neighborhood.
Geico is underwriting the party.
Last year BuzzFeed’s negotiations to secure a table at the actual dinner broke down and ultimately failed. So they picked up their toys and said f**k it, we’re throwing our own WHCD party. Friction reportedly ensued over whether a Ben Smith cameo would be left in a House of Cards spoof video created by WHCD organizers. In the video, Smith said “a colonoscopy would be cooler than that dinner.”
Which didn’t go over quite so well.
Asked if BuzzFeed would have an actual table at the dinner this year, publicist Ashley McCollum succinctly told The Mirror, “No table.”
She said this year’s BuzzFeed partygoers will get an upgrade. Last year’s pedicabs will be left in the dust and guests will be transported by trolley from the Washington Hilton to the bar.
The party is by invitation only.
