Media ignores sold-out global warming ‘skeptic’ conference

Climate scientists skeptical of claims that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are warming the planet gathered in Germany this month for a major, now sold-out climate conference, which the media has opted not to cover.

In early April, the European Institute for Climate and Energy (EIKE) hosted its seventh Climate Conference in Mannheim, Germany. The two-day conference featured prominent climate scientists including Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, physicist Nir Shaviv of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and physicist Henrik Svensmark of the Danish National Space Institute.

The large conference room where the event took place was big enough to hold 100 people, according to EIKE, but 130 climate experts from various fields packed the room full.

Despite the large turnout, not a single member of the media was present to report on remarks made by scientists critical of United Nations claims that global warming will doom the planet. EIKE reports that none of the three local German media outlets it invited to the event bothered to show up, and chances are that major U.S. media outlets were too busy covering the release of the United Nations’ major climate report to report on this gathering of skeptics.

“Does the print media see the writing on the wall as to why readers are leaving in droves?” EIKE asks. “It’s little wonder. The readers want to see objective information, and not eco-propaganda.”

“As it stands, one has to consider the often sworn free, objective German media as definitely having reached communist East Germany media levels,” EIKE added.

The conference started on April 10th and the UN released its latest climate report on April 13, which said that the world needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70 percent by 2050 or face catastrophe.

“This report is a wake-up call about global economic opportunity we can seize today as we lead on climate change,” said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry after the report’s release. “This report makes very clear we face an issue of global willpower, not capacity.”

But scientists at EIKE’s conference give a different picture of the state of global warming: it’s far from catastrophic. Skeptical scientists argue that there has only been slight warming in the past century — less than 0.8 degrees Celsius — and global temperatures stopped their upward trend in the late 1990s and have not risen in 17 years.

The media’s neglect of a major conference of climate skeptics comes as some outlets are actively preventing those skeptical of global warming from appearing on air or being published. Not only that, but environmentalists and some alarmist climate scientists have been refusing to debate skeptics on TV or radio.

The Daily Mail reported last month that a BBC Scotland “executive in charge of editorial standards has ordered programme editors not to broadcast debates between climate scientists and global warming sceptics.” And last year the Los Angeles Times announced that it was not going to publish letters to the editor from global warming skeptics because the evidence provided by scientists suggests that human activity is warming the planet.
