How To Drink All Night Without Getting Drunk

Sam Adams celeb Jim Koch has the answer to a question you definitely ask yourself all the time: How can I drink a lot of beer without the hassle of getting drunk?

In an interview with Esquire, Koch said active yeast is the secret:

“You wanna know my secret? How I can drink beer all night long and never get drunk? … Active yeast. Like you get at the grocery store.”

Koch told me that for years he has swallowed your standard Fleischmann’s dry yeast before he drinks, stirring the white powdery substance in with some yogurt to make it more palatable.

“One teaspoon per beer, right before you start drinking.”

Seems like a lot of planning. What if you eat five teaspoons but only end up having two beers? Or vice versa? Maybe he means eat one teaspoon before each beer separately. Either way, the guy’s a genius.

He learned the trick from his buddy Dr. Joe Owades, also a craft beer legend who had a biochem PhD and was a fermentation science expert — he patented an “unlimited drunkenness” product shortly before his death. Owades figured out that alcohol dehydrogenases, an enzyme in yeast, can metabolize the alcohol before it gets into your bloodstream.

“And it will mitigate – not eliminate – but mitigate the effects of alcohol!” Koch told Esquire.

Awesome. Next time you’re craving a lot of beer but hate the idea of getting drunk, just discreetly pull out and consume a white powdery substance.
