A workers’ rights activist estimates that at least 4,000 workers will die before the kickoff of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, due to to awful living and working conditions filmed in an ESPN investigative report by Jeremy Schaap.
Qatar, a Gulf Arab state with a population of more than two million, lacks sufficient numbers of workers to build the stadiums for the marquee soccer tournament. The workers emigrating from Nepal and India have faced squalid living conditions and dangerous work environments, according to ESPN, which entered Qatari labor camps without permission from the government to film its Tuesday report.
“Conservatively, from the figures of just two countries, India and Nepal, more than 4,000 workers will die before a ball is kicked off in 2022,” said Sharan Burrow, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation.
