Alex Trebek, the iconic host of Jeopardy, has come out as a supporter of keeping the Washington Redskins’ much-maligned name.
Trebek recently told The New Republic that, like most people, he relaxes by watching TV, especially watching his two favorite sports teams: the Lakers and the Redskins. On the name change debate, he said, “They weren’t called the Redskins because we thought Redskins were terrible; it’s because we admire their strength, their abilities.”
So the eighth most-trusted person in the United States, as voted a few years ago in a Reader’s Digest Poll, thinks that the name represents a proud tradition of a culture, not a racial slur. Just a thought.
