Despite being shot numerous times, a California man protected his three younger siblings Tuesday from two would-be robbers in a gun battle that left one of the intruders dead.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s office said that at around 5:45 a.m., a 22 year-old man saw two people breaking through the door of his home near Orosi, Cali.

The man’s three younger siblings — ages 18, 11 and 8 — were inside the house.

The older brother grabbed a gun from his safe and approached the intruders, exchanging fire with at least one of them. The man was shot multiple times, though he seriously wounded one of the suspects and killed another.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s report indicates that the injured suspect tried to drag the deceased suspect into a Chevy Astro van, though he was unable to do so, leaving his partner in crime behind.

Two other men transported the injured suspect to the Kaweah Delta District hospital where security cameras captured their images, the report states.

The successful home defense comes as state and national politicians are proposing stricter gun laws following Elliot Rodger’s murder spree in Isla Vista, Cali. last week, which left six victims dead. Three of Rodger’s victims were found stabbed to death, while three others were shot. Rodger’s was found with three semi-automatic handguns, though all were legally purchased and registered.
