After stabbing their friend 19 times, two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls have been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and will appear in adult court. The two girls apparently intended the attempted murder to serve as a tribute to the character Slender Man, the leader of the fictional world of the website Creepypasta Wiki.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier discovered the website devoted to horror stories in December, and soon began plotting the tribute. By killing their friend, they believed they could become “proxies” of Slender Man. Geyser and Weier ultimately hoped to join Slender Man at his mansion in the Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin.

The two girls selected May 30, Geyser’s birthday, as the date for the attack. Geyser hosted a sleepover that night for Weier and their victim. The next morning, the group went to play in a wooded park, where Geyser and Weier brutally attacked their friend with a knife.

Geyser and Weier told their victim they were going to get help but left the wounded girl in the park. The victim managed to make her way to the sidewalk, and a bicyclist later found her covered in blood. The young girl remains in the hospital in stable but grievous condition.

When talking to police, Geyser said that she “didn’t feel remorse” after the stabbing and did not act in self defense. The girl’s chilling account caused her own family to cry during her court hearing.

Geyser and Weier’s calculated act also rattled investigators. Police Chief Russell Jack described the attack as “a wake-up call for parents” to monitor their children’s Internet use.
