Mississippi Senate Primary Too Close To Call

One of the nastiest races of 2014 was left unresolved on election night Tuesday and looks to be heading to a runoff.

With 98 percent of the voting precincts in Mississippi accounted for, the state’s contentious Republican Senate primary shows tea party challenger State Sen. Chris McDaniel maintaining a small lead with 49.6 percent of the vote over incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran’s 48.8 percent.

A third candidate, Thomas Carey, finished with 1.6 percent of the vote and conceded the race late Tuesday night.

Neither McDaniel or Cochran managed to pass the threshold of 50 percent to avoid a runoff with the reported results — opening up the strong likelihood of  a runoff taking place on June 24 to decide which candidate will be the GOP nominee.

Former Rep. Travis Childers won the Democratic primary on Tuesday, and will face either Cochran or McDaniel in the general election.
