Dennis Kneier, mayor of San Marino, Calif., resigned as mayor Wednesday after a video was released of him throwing a bag of dog poop on his neighbor’s front lawn.
According to The Pasadena Star News, Kneier expressed “regret” in his resignation letter, and added, “I’m not making any excuses…I will continue on.”
Kneier will continue to serve as city councilman, as he has for seven years, until his term ends in November 2015.
The surveillance video, released earlier this month, shows Kneier tossing a plastic bag onto neighbor Philip Lao’s property. After Lao showed authorities the video, Kneier was given a ticket for littering.
Deemed “Poopgate,” the video went viral and Kneier said that his actions embarrassed himself “and the city.”
City Councilman Eugene Sun will act as mayor until June 27, when the city council will meet.
