Alex Madrigal, who has covered science and tech for The Atlantic since 2010, was named editor of TheAtlantic.com. The role is newly created. He’ll work closely with J.J. Gould, the editor. Madrigal will also oversee social media.

“As valuable as Alexis has been to The Atlantic as a writer and editor, he’s also played a major part in helping shape our digital culture generally,” said Gould in announcing Madrigal’s new role. “This new job recognizes his leadership around here as much as enables it.”

Madrigal lives in Oakland, Calif., and is a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley’s Center for Science, Technology, Medicine & Society. He will remain in Oakland.
