Colorado Republican Rep. Cory Gardner raised $2.7 million in his bid to unseat Democratic incumbent Mark Udall in the second quarter, nearly double the amount he raised in the previous quarter.

Gardner got into the race with $800,000 cash on hand and raised $1.4 million by early April. With his new totals, he has $3.4 million cash on hand.

Gardner’s period-to-date total beats Udall’s first quarter fundraising by about $600,000. At the end of the last reporting period, Udall had $5.9 million in the bank.

Udall has yet to report his second quarter tally, but likely benefited from a last-minute fundraising appearance by President Obama this week, even though Udall himself stayed in Washington and didn’t appear at the private lunch in downtown Denver.

“It’s clear that Coloradans are energized and ready for a new generation of leadership in the Senate,” Gardner said in a statement. “Senator Udall has been nothing more than a rubber stamp for President Obama’s failed agenda whether it’s energy, healthcare, veterans, or spending policies. I am incredibly grateful for my supporters’ generosity and look forward to continuing our campaign to give Colorado an effective voice in the Capitol.”

Gardner and Udall are neck and neck in one of the most closely watched races in the nation. Since the spring, Gardner has been within one point of the incumbent, according to Rasmussen polls.

Expenditures from outside groups will also climb into the millions, much of it to be spent on advertising campaigns for both sides. The race is expected to be one of the most expensive in the country.
