California investigators have been receiving reports from families for weeks — each concerned after a porcelain doll resembling their pre-teen daughter was placed on their doorstep — and they’ve finally solved the case.
The first family filed police a police report June 16, but at that point investigators didn’t take it seriously, ABC News reports. But when seven more followed up with the same story, they began meeting with the families and looking for patterns.
Each of the families received a doll that strongly resembled their daughter — all of the targeted girls were around 10-years-old.
Late Thursday, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement the mystery was solved: An adult woman who attends church with many of the families had been distributing the dolls as a kind gesture.
