Cautious Chinese beachgoers are now letting criminals set the trends and have taken sun protection up a level by wearing face masks, called “face-kinis,” while swimming and sunbathing.
Resembling a ski mask and made of nylon, the face-kini covers the person’s entire head, except their eyes, nose, and mouth, and are usually worn with a wetsuit for maximum protection. They are sold in bright colors and patterns for about $9 a piece on Amazon.
They are most popular in the Chinese resort town Qingdao, and likely produce one hell of a tanline.
The trend was featured in Carine Roitfield’s “CR Fashion Book” in August, calling them a “hidden retreat in this season’s swimear.” However, it’s doubtful many face-kini wearers are also sporting a chic Gucci swimsuit and David Yurman necklace alongside their mask.
