Barack and Michelle Obama commemorated 9/11 Thursday by working with a group called KaBOOM!.

Michelle instagrammed a photo the first couple working with the KaBOOM! volunteers to assemble backpacks with the caption: “President Obama and the First Lady joined millions across the country to commemorate the September 11 attacks with acts of service, assembling backpacks with @KaBOOM volunteers.”

According to its website, “KaBOOM! works to bring balanced and active play into the daily lives of all children, particularly those growing up in poverty in America.”

Reactions on Instagram to the photo were mixed. “You guys are the best! I’m so proud of My First Family,” user vposse commented. But user tae.bae was unimpressed. “OMG,” she commented. “Ewww noooo.”

Last week, President Obama admitted the “theater” of politics is not his strong point in an interview for NBC’s “Meet the Press” with Chuck Todd. “Part of this job is also the theater of it,” he said. “Well, it’s not something that always comes naturally to me. But it matters. And I’m mindful of that.”
