The conservative Rescue The Senate PAC has released a new video mocking Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken’s past as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live.

Franken leads Republican challenger Mike McFadden by less than ten points in his re-election bid with two months to go until an Election Day on which Republicans are expected to make sizable congressional gains.

Franken’s signature character on the show, a recovering alcoholic named Stuart Smalley who tries to boost his self-esteem by complimenting himself in the mirror, spawned a poorly received 1995 movie called “Stuart Saves His Family.”

Watch:

Franken has staunchly avoided conversations about his comedy career since he’s been in the Senate, and routinely rebuffs national reporters based on his personal policy of only speaking to Minnesota press.

“I have been advised by many insiders that he has a glass jaw when it comes to references to his SNL past,” Rescue the Senate spokesman Mark Meckler told The Daily Caller.

Franken, a reportedly heavy drug user during his SNL days, later starred on the failed sitcom LateLine, hosted a show on the failed left-wing Air America radio network, and wrote books attacking Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly, among others.

Franken’s election to the Senate over Norm Coleman in 2008 was marked by recounts and accusations of voter fraud involving convicted felons that cast votes.
