The head doctor for the procedure, Dr. Tristan Rich, described the surgery in a radio interview, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The owner had become extremely attached to the fish, and was willing to pay $200 for the surgery.

The surgery, which lasted for 45 minutes, alleviated the pressure from the tumor, and the 10-year-old fish is expected to make a full recovery.

“George is now doing great; he spent a few days in the tank, and is now swimming happily in the pond,” Rich said.
