Matt Damon is returning as Jason Bourne for a fourth film, Deadline’s sources confirmed Tuesday.

Universal Pictures is reuniting director Paul Greengrass, from “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” with Damon to make the next film in the “Bourne” series. This comes as quite the surprise, because both actor and director have said they would not return to the series after Damon’s character, an agent with amnesia, regained his memory. Damon also said multiple times he would not return unless Greengrass did as well.

His last film, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” premiered in 2007 after 2004’s “The Bourne Supremacy” and the trilogy opener “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, which Greengrass did not direct.

The third film, which will complete the trilogy based on Robert Ludlum novels, is set to debut in July 2016.
