You had to listen closely, but during his appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” Thursday, Bill Clinton took a jab at President Barack Obama’s lackluster economy.

In an interview otherwise noted for being as contentious as a Russian state media interview of Vladimir Putin, the former president and potential future first gentleman reminded viewers that the economy was booming during his presidency, unlike now.

“People are worried about this border problem we had recently with the Central American kids showing up. They mostly were running away from gang violence and drug traffickers,” Clinton said. “But we actually have far fewer illegals crossing the border now than we had when I was president and the economy was booming and we had to build up the defenses there.”

Clinton also took one more subtle shot at Obama’s policies during the interview.

As Clinton ticked off the things that are going right in the world now, host Jon Stewart jumped in to note: “Middle class is rising around the world, just not here.”

“That’s a different topic,” Clinton retorted. “We’ve got to have a different strategy in America.”

A different strategy than … Obama’s?

Yes, admittedly, this is small stuff. But it is another example of the Clintons trying to distance themselves from Obama as Hillary moves ever closer to announcing her candidacy for president in 2016.
