The film’s director, William H. Macy, said he handpicked Gomez for the film after seeing her alongside James Franco in “Spring Breakers,” which follows a group of college girls who get in over their heads during a violent beach trip.

“Rudderless” is an indie film that follows an advertising executive who drowns his grief in alcohol after his son dies. While living alone, he discovers his son was secretly musically talented. Gomez plays Kate, the son’s ex-girlfriend. (RELATED: Selena Gomez Knows No Limits)

“Rudderless,” shown at Sundance earlier this year, premieres in theaters Oct. 17.
