American viewers got a firsthand view Wednesday of why Turkey is ranked so lowly on freedom of the press by non-profits. A live Fox News report on the fight against ISIS in Kobani was interrupted by the Turkish military.

Shortly after Fox journalist Greg Palkot began his report, voices could be heard in the background. “By the way, you are hearing behind me the loudspeakers of the Turkish military. They are about the kick us out of here; they are concerned about Kurdish protesters.”

Eventually, the sound of sirens became so loud Palkot was forced to abandon the report. The camera panned to reveal a military Humvee shouting instructions at the reporters in Turkish.

“If I don’t close this live shot in 15 seconds, we’re about to get a massive wave of tear gas,” Palkot wrapped up. “So that’s it from here, on Turkish soil with antagonistic military here and the fighting behind me. Back to you guys at the New York studio.”

Turkey has come under fire by many for failing to engage with ISIS, even as the extremists attacked the critical Syrian town of Kobani on the Turkish border. NBC’s Peter Engel reported that “Turkish troops sitting 200 yards away doing nothing… Turkish tanks have their cannons pointed at Kobani, and they aren’t firing.”
