“Ex-Machina,” the first film directed by “Sunshine” and “28 Days Later” writer Alex Garland, combines the intense, scary and sci-fi elements of his major hits to explore a quickly emerging and potentially dangerous technology — artificial intelligence.
The trailer opens with the friend of a researcher behind a breakthrough AI arriving at a remote lab to serve as the AI’s Turing test, which is designed to gauge a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent, human-like behavior. But the tables quickly turn when the AI begins to hint to “her” evaluator that there may be more going on than meets the eye — human or otherwise.
