While most girls her age were decorating their dorm rooms, Saira Blair was campaigning to be a West Virginia state lawmaker — and she succeeded. This makes her the youngest state legislator in the nation.

“Today, the voters of the 59th District in the great state of West Virginia sent a clear message that the path to prosperity and success is rooted in conservative values and principles,” Blair said on her campaign’s Facebook page.

The Republican 18-year-old Blair defeated her 44-year-old Democratic opponent 63 percent to 30 percent Tuesday, according to The Wall Street Journal. Blair said if she’s elected she wants to bring more jobs to West Virginia in an interview on Fox News.

Her website boasts that she is endorsed by the NRA, West Virginians for Life and about a dozen other conservative groups.

To skeptics, Blair said that her age offers a fresh perspective to the West Virginia House of Delegates. Currently a freshman at West Virginia University, Blair intends to take the Spring semester off to attend the part-time legislature’s 60-day session, according to The WSJ.
