Count Lindsey Graham among those who want President Obama to work with the new Congress on immigration rather than sign an executive action giving legal status to millions of illegal immigrants.

Speaking to Steve Doocy on “Fox and Friends” Tuesday morning, Graham said that the president is “making a bad situation worse” with the threat. The recently re-elected senator also questioned why Obama won’t give the new Congress “six months to find out if we can find a comprehensive, partial solution” to a broken system, while noting that “patience is a virtue in life, and it’s a necessity in politics.”

“It’s making a bad situation worse. Clearly the American people do not like Barack Obama going it alone. My advice to the president is give the new Congress a chance to work with you to find a solution to immigration that doesn’t involve executive action, which would be very limited,” said the South Carolina senator. “If you give people legal status without first securing your borders in a sound way, you’re going to have a big run on your border.”

“There will be a backlash by most Americans to this idea of the president with a pen trying to fix part of the immigration system. Patience is a virtue in life, it’s a necessity in politics,” said Graham. “What is the down side of giving the new Congress six months to find out if we can find a comprehensive, partial solution to an immigration system that’s broken?

“Why doesn’t he understand the election was about people wanting him to change his policies?” he added.
