Here is another one of our “Why I Carry” stories. These stories, unlike our defensive gun use stories, take a look at situations that may have turned out very differently if the victim(s) had been armed. These stories are the “other side of the coin” so to speak and serve as an important reminder as to why it’s important to take responsibility for your own personal safety.

What is it that Moms Demand Action keeps saying? Oh yeah, who needs a gun while shopping at Kroger?

Apparently an Atlanta area man could have used one earlier this week. According to WSBTV:

Police are looking for three men they say jumped another outside of a grocery store in Fulton County and then shot him in the stomach after the scuffle.

Investigators said Daniel McHugh, 48, was just out shopping for groceries at the Kroger on Old National Highway when he caught the attention of three males who approached him and shot him with hardly any words exchanged.

Channel 2’s Carl Willis talked to McHugh’s roommates who say they hadn’t seen him and had no idea what happened to him last Thursday until Willis told them.

“This is a great shock. He’s a mild-mannered kind of guy,” said roommate Rob Rogers. “Paul said if he didn’t hear from him in 18 hours he was going to file a missing persons report.”

Robbery is the suspected motive in the crime and the three suspects remain at large. MDA – crime can and does happen anywhere at anytime. If you don’t want to take responsibility for your own personal safety and instead rely on the police, that’s absolutely fine. It’s your right to choose to do so. However, stop trying to restrict my right to take responsibility for my own safety. Your right to feel safe does not trump my right to actual safety.

As always, I have to point out that a firearm may or may not have helped prevent or stop this crime. However, I prefer to have options whenever possible over simply begging for my life.
