Commuters in Japan got their first ride on the fastest train in the world, which when completed, will carry passengers from Tokyo to Nagoya — more than 200 miles — in 40 minutes.

The train’s first riders hit a top speed of 311 mph late last week during one of Central Japan Railway Company’s eight days of testing along a 27-miles stretch, The BBC reports.

The maglev is the fastest in the world, beating out China’s Shanghai Maglev top speed of 268 mph, and dwarfing the U.S.’s Acela Express, which can hit 150 mph between New York and Boston, according to Vox.

Japan’s maglev is scheduled for completion in 2027.
