On Sunday, Rio announced its choices for the 2016 Olympic Mascots.

OK, the past few Olympics have spawned some bizarre icons, but what the hell did I just see?

Apparently that yellow, cat-monkey abomination is the official Olympic mascot: “I’m a mixture of all the Brazilian animals. I was born out of the explosion of joy that happened when they announced that Rio would host the Olympic Games, on 2 October 2009.”

How cute.

Similarly, the blue thing represents the Paralympics and is a combination of all the Brazilian fauna. Or, maybe it’s just an artistic representation of Anderson Varejao.

Both mascots don’t have names yet, and you can vote on what to call the two at the official site.

At least these guys won’t haunt your dreams like Sochi’s “Nightmare Bear.”
