In a lengthy essay in “People” magazine out Friday, Stephen Collins allegedly admits to sexually abusing three underage girls and explains what happened “in vivid detail” during the 20-year period.

“Forty years ago, I did something terribly wrong that I deeply regret,” Collins writes.

“I have been working to atone for it ever since.”

The 67-year-old, who played the patriarch of the Camden family and minister on the family TV series “7th Heaven, hit the public eye in October after TMZ published a recording of him from a therapy session with his wife admitting that he had exposed himself to an minor. “On the recording, I described events that took place 20, 32, and 40 years ago. The publication of the recording has resulted in assumptions and innuendos about what I did that go far beyond what actually occurred. As difficult as this is, I want people to know the truth.”

Collins said he has “agonized” over whether or not he should directly apologize to the victims.

“But after I learned in the course of my treatment that my being direct about such matters could actually make things worse for them by opening old wounds, I have not approached the other two women, one of whom is now in her 50s and the other in her 30s.”

Collins will have a one-on-one with Katie Couric on Yahoo Friday, the same day the “People” magazine issue hits newsstands. (RELATED: Stephen Collins Called Topless Jessica Biel Photos ‘Child Porn’)
