Marco Rubio probably could have done without the praise from host Jon Stewart during his appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” Tuesday.
During an occasionally awkward interview, the conservative Florida senator ultimately charmed Stewart while explaining some of the economic proposals in his new book, “American Dreams.” Stewart agreed that some of Rubio’s proposals were “great ideas” but argued that they seemed to him to be at odds with modern conservatism.
Then, at the very end of the interview, the liberal late night comedian delivered a kiss of death to the potential Republican presidential contender.
“Here’s your problem,” Stewart said in the extended online version of the interview, “in your heart, you’re a Democrat”
“Why?” a surprised Rubio responded.
“Because, here’s the thing, you’re almost a Democrat,” Stewart explained. “You care about the things that have happened to you, so you have empathy when you understand it.”
“I think you misunderstand conservatism,” Rubio shot back.
“You’re probably right — because I listen to them,” Stewart quipped.
“So do I,” Rubio protested. “I’m one of them!”
