Taxpayers Will Bail Out Feds For Obamacare Mistake

Taxpayers will have to foot the bill for the government’s latest Obamacare mistake, the Internal Revenue Service said Monday.

About 50,000 Obamacare enrollees have already filed returns using wrong information sent to them by the government, so some of them still owe taxes, and others paid too much. The IRS announced those who paid too much will be refunded, but those who underpaid will not have to fork over additional money, reported The Wall Street Journal.

“This is yet another example of the administration covering their tracks to avoid the political fallout of mistakes made in executing their own law,” Senate Finance Committee Chair Orrin Hatch said in a statement to reporters. “Unilateral action such as this deserves further scrutiny by Congress.”

The government said last week it sent about 800,000 Obamacare enrollees the wrong tax information for their returns, because of a glitch in the system. They were told not to file their taxes until corrected information is sent out in March. The special IRS deal only applies to those 50,000 who have already filed their taxes.

“Individuals may want to consult with their tax preparers to determine if they would benefit from filing amended returns,” a Treasury spokesperson said in a statement to reporters.

Many taxpayers who either underestimated their income or did not update the government with changes in income received subsidies they are not qualified for, and will owe unexpected taxes. (RELATED: McConnell Warns Americans Are About To Get Whacked By Obamacare Taxes)

“While I understand the administration is embarrassed by its own incompetence, they can’t just shovel taxpayer money out the door to prop up the president’s failed health-care law,” Republican Sen. John Barrasso said in a statement to reporters.
