Officials at South Windsor High School in the suburbs of Hartford, Conn. have placed a popular high school English teacher on paid leave for asking students to read an explicit raunchy, staggeringly detailed poem about the glory of sex between two men.
The teacher is David Olio, NBC Connecticut reports.
Administrators at the taxpayer-funded school have characterized Olio’s vulgar choice of verse “highly inappropriate,” according to CBS affiliate WFSB.
The bawdy poem the English teacher decided to assign is entitled “Please Master.” The author is Allen Ginsberg, Beat Generation icon and proud member of the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA).
Parents said they were not amused by the assignment.
“I couldn’t read the whole poem it was so inappropriate,” one parent told WFSB. “After I got into a few lines, I couldn’t believe what I was reading.”
Brett Hildebrand, a senior student in the class, told the station that the teacher “was looking for something to read to the class and jokingly said this one because it was in a book with other poem.”
Local school district superintendent Kate Carter declared that she is shocked and deeply concerned.
“I do wish to emphasize that we take seriously the trust that parents place in teachers and administrators,” Carter wrote in an email to parents obtained by NBC Connecticut.
The district does “not tolerate the use of inappropriate materials in classroom settings,” Carter added.
Olio’s period of paid leave will last at least for the duration of a pending investigation. He is barred from school property while his suspension remains in effect.
Last month, at Nederland High School in Nederland, Texas, an unnamed math teacher resigned after reading a vulgar poem aloud to a class full of freshmen, according to angry parents. (RELATED: Teacher Resigns After Reading This REALLY RAUNCHY Poem In Freshman Math Class)
The rhyme the Texas teacher busted out was about Adam and Eve having sex.
