WALLACE: I’m glad you didn’t say I was going to make sense of all this, because I can’t. I can’t think of a time in my lifetime when the situation in the Middle East has been more confused and U.S. policy has been more difficult to understand. I’m not sure there is a policy or a strategy. I suppose you can say the fact that the Saudis and the Sunni states have stood up against Iran and fighting in Yemen is a good thing. We’re not in the lead. They are.

But having said that, as you point out, you’ve got the possibility of Sunni states against Shia states, especially Iran in Iraq, and in Yemen, in Syria. It is a mess. And I think part of it has to be because the U.S. is pulling out and there’s a vacuum that has been created and the various parties are trying to fill the vacuum.

At the same time we’re at an all-time low in relations with Israel and trying to negotiate with Iran. You need a program to figure out who the players are in this thing, Shep.
