Multiple strange stories surfaced during HBO’s two-hour documentary on the Church of Scientology Sunday night, including allegations that the church blackmails John Travolta. But perhaps the weirdest was that the church “assigned” a woman to date Tom Cruise after his divorce from Nicole Kidman.

In “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” Scientology leader David Miscavige reportedly heard Cruise complaining “that he wanted a new girlfriend.”

Nazanin Boniadi, an actress you may recognize from “How I Met Your Mother” and “Homeland,” was a young Scientologist at the time. The Church had Boniadi sign a non-disclosure agreement and bought her $20,000 in clothes, along with getting her braces removed and dying her hair a color “to Cruise’s liking.”

She was assigned to be Cruise’s girlfriend,  Lawrence Wright–who wrote the book the documentary is based on—alleges.

“Gibney tells the story that shortly after Boniadi moved in with Cruise, they got a visit from Miscavige. Boniadi had a headache and wasn’t too responsive, and later, Cruise screamed at her for not being more respectful to the Scientology leader. She was soon told that she was no longer Cruise’s girlfriend, and was shipped back to another Scientology center.”

When Boniadi told a friend she was heartbroken over the breakup, she was punished and forced to clean bathrooms with a toothbrush.
