Vox Is Really, Really White

Ezra Klein‘s Vox.com congratulated itself on its 1-year-old “Voxiversary” this week.

And my God, look how white these people are.

Is this really supposed to pass for diversity?

Yes, the word “voxiversary” is as irritating as it sounds — a really long road trip with WaPo‘s Wesley Lowery coupled with a large canker sore honestly sounds like a better time.

But nope. They don’t stop there. They actually go on to do an explainer about the Voxiversary (I promise to stop repeating this ridiculous word) in which they ask themselves questions. And yes (groan), there are charts about the site.

Sorry. I lied about using the V-word. They really wrote this sentence (just in case you’re a real dumbass):

“Voxiversary commemorates the first full day of publishing internet content on Vox.com.”

Pausing for a moment of self-reflection, they asked themselves if there were ways in which Vox “fell short” this year. It’s like they couldn’t wait for this one.

“Oh god. Yes. So many. It’s not just mistakes — though we’ve made our fair share of those. It’s any time we put up an explainer that didn’t leave readers with a solid understanding of the issues. It’s every time we didn’t do enough reporting or research and missed a key fact or powerful insight. It’s any time someone came to our homepage looking for a guide to a topic and couldn’t find it. It’s every time we didn’t update a card stack fast enough. There’s a lot we did wrong, but there’s also a lot we didn’t do nearly right enough.”

On a positive note, Vox did ensure that its full congratulatory note addressed a few different faiths — even if the staff picture is full of white people.

“April 7 is a glorious day in history: it marks the first Voxiversary. While it hasn’t yet attained the status of Christmas or Passover or Easter or July 4 or Thanksgiving or even April Fools’ Day, it is a very important day for us at Vox, and we hope it wins a place in your heart alongside Franksgiving and other novelty celebrations.”

And with that, Happy Voxiversary to what may be the whitest newsroom this side of the Mississippi.
