Nothing Sexist About Clinton’s ‘Hillary’ Campaign Organization

Democratic presidential campaign candidate Hillary Clinton’s organization calls itself “Hillary for America,” but Democratic activists believed just days ago it was “sexist” to refer to the former secretary of state and senator of New York in such a casual fashion.

“I think it’s pretty unjust,” said Monica Warek, a 23-year-old activist to McClatchy. “I think it shows the level of inequality that still exists in the workforce and just in general in society.”

New Yorker John Mosier said, “I think it generally cheapens the image of the candidate.”

Deborah Tannen, a linguistics professor at Georgetown University who referred to Clinton in her book, believes Clinton is called by her first name partly because “Hillary” is more unique than other female names, but Tannen still considers the practice to be disrespectful to the candidate.

Other Clinton fans disagree, saying it makes her more approachable and likeable as a person. Nevertheless, Clinton is known to sign her books as “Hillary” and supporters prepared her campaign with an organization called “Ready for Hillary” and as a candidate for office as of Sunday she will be campaigning with the organization that only bears her first name.
