The “listening” portion of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign may be underway, but Bill Kristol is deeply skeptical of her slow rollout as the former secretary of state started off in Iowa Tuesday.

In an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show” Tuesday, Kristol openly wondered if Clinton’s “mingling with the peasants” tour is working thus far, telling the host she should travel like a normal American if she wants to be perceived as one.

“The Hillary thing, can that possibly work? Are people going to look at that and think ‘oh that’s great, she’s just mixing — mingling with the peasants out there. That just shows how in touch she is with the rest of us.'”

“They don’t want to say anything controversial,” Kristol continued. “It gets her out there. People talk about her, maybe it softens the edges. Kind of like ‘ehh, well she seems like a nice woman.’ But it’s also, kind of, just weird. She comes to some Chipotle with her aide and they have sunglasses on, and they just buy their burrito and don’t talk to anyone.”

“I keep saying, if she wants to be like a regular American, she should get on a plane at LaGuardia, sit in seat 25E or whatever and, you know, have a delayed flight out to Des Moines like the rest of us instead of having the Secret Service drive her out there in a, sort of a weird, quite expensive van,” he concluded.
