In a new PSA for the Center for Reproductive Rights, “Girls” actress Jemima Kirke reveals she had an abortion in college.

Kirke, who has been an actress on the Lena Dunham-created series since 2012, said she was in college in 2007 when she got pregnant by her boyfriend.

“I wasn’t sure that I wanted to be attached to this person for the rest of my life,” Kirke said. “My life was not conducive to raising a healthy, happy child. I just didn’t feel it was fair.”

Kirke said she didn’t want to tell her mother about the abortion, either, and had to empty her checking account to pay for it.

Kirke, now married with two children, said she’s speaking out about her abortion because there is still “shame and embarrassment around terminating pregnancies.”

“It’s these obstacles and this stigma that makes these things not completely unavailable. And that’s the tricky part, we do have free choice, and we are able to do whatever we want, but then there are these little hoops we have to jump through to get them.”
