Republican senator and presidential candidate Marco Rubio said Sunday he believes sexual preference is not a choice and is decided at birth, but that state’s should still be allowed to ban gay marriage.

“It’s not that I’m against gay marriage,” Rubio said on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” when asked if he believes homosexuality is a choice. “I believe the definition of the institution of marriage should be between one man and one woman.”

“States have always regulated marriage,” he continued. “And if a state wants to have a different definition, you should petition the state legislature and have a political debate. I don’t think courts should be making that decision, and I don’t believe same-sex marriage is a Constitutional right.”

“I also don’t believe that your sexual preferences are a choice for the vast and enormous majority of people. In fact, the bottom line is that I believe that sexual preference is something that people are born with.”

Rubio recently declared his candidacy, and has fielded multiple questions about gay marriage. He said last week he would attend a gay wedding of a family member or staffer. (RELATED: In Spanish Language Interview Rubio Says He Believes Obama’s Executive Amnesty Is Important)
