Former President Bill Clinton told NBC News in an exclusive interview that he is confident that the Clinton Foundation never did anything “knowingly inappropriate” when it accepted millions in foreign donations while his wife Hillary Clinton was secretary of state. “I don’t think there’s anything sinister in trying to get wealthy people and countries that are seriously involved in development to spend their money wisely in a way that helps people,” Clinton told NBC’s Cynthia McFadden. “I don’t think there’s anything bad about that. I think it’s good!”

“There’s been a very deliberate attempt to take the Foundation down,” he said. “And there is almost no new fact that’s known now that wasn’t known when she ran for president the first time.”

“There is no doubt in my mind that we have never done anything knowingly inappropriate in terms of taking money to influence any kind of American government policy,” he said. “That just hasn’t happened.” (VIDEO: Clinton Foundation Caught Straight-Up Lying To New York Times Reporter)

The word “knowingly” is key, since Clinton readily admitted that the Foundation failed to disclose donations from foreign governments on certain tax forms. “The guy that filled out the forms made an error,” he said. “Now that is a bigger problem, according to the press, than the other people running for president willing to take dark money, secret money, secret from beginning to end.”
