A Georgia sheriff with a history of corruption charges allegedly shot a woman Sunday and was allowed to leave the scene.
Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Brian Doan said Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill, who claims it was an accident when he shot Gwenevere McCord in the stomach Sunday night, is not cooperating with investigators. Authorities say he was allowed to leave the scene of the incident because he is the sheriff, 11Alive reports.
Hill allegedly shot a woman inside a model home Sunday night near Lawrenceville, Ga., and then called police to report it. Authorities are investigating the shooting and the woman is hospitalized in critical condition.

Gwinnett County police told CBS46 that Hill had been “uncooperative” in the investigation.
“He’s refusing to give any statements,” Doan told CBS46. “His attorney was on scene with him. So at this point, it’ll be a cooperation between our criminal investigation division and the district attorney’s office, if charges are ever filed.”
This isn’t Hill’s first run-in with the law as sheriff. Hill was at one point charged with 37 counts of corruption for allegations that he stole from the county, including allegations that he took the county credit cards and vehicles for pleasure trips to casinos and other destinations with former female employees.
Hill’s defense admitted that he took the trips, which led to about $1,000 in questionable costs, but argued it was acceptable because as sheriff he was always on the job. His defense alleged there was racism behind the allegations.
“There’s been a sea of whiteness casting allegations against him,” defense attorney Drew Findling said.
Hill was was later acquitted, and he has not been charged in Sunday’s shooting so far.
