Baltimore celebrated Memorial Day weekend with a slew of shootings, continuing the violent streak since the Baltimore riots.

Baltimore saw 28 shootings over the weekend, nine of them fatal, CBS Baltimore reports. The city’s mayor met to discuss an uptick in violence, which was shortly followed by two homicides Monday, bringing the city’s total homicides to 35 for the month of May, with 108 for the year.

“It’s deplorable,” City Councilman William “Pete” Welch told The Baltimore Sun. “The shootings and killings are all over the city. I don’t think any part of the city is immune to this. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The 35 homicides this month is the highest number since 1999.

Baltimore has seen a huge spike in violence since the rioting over the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who suffered fatal injuries during his time in police custody. The riots left much of the city burned and looted. Six officers have been charged in the death.

Legal experts, however, have said the charges might be too harsh for the prosecutor to get convictions. Baltimore City State Attorney Marilyn Mosby has also been under fire for allegations of a conflict of interest.

If the experts are right, a failure to convict the officers could incite violence worse than what Baltimore has seen thus far.
