A 37-year-old Georgia man pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support for the Islamic State Wednesday.

Leon Nathan Davis purchased an airline ticket to Turkey to try and join the terror group by being smuggled into Syria, but he was arrested in Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in October of 2014, according to the Department of Justice.

The testimony of FBI agent Gutis Zunde revealed Davis planned to teach English to jihadis. Davis wasn’t sure what role he would play in the Islamic State, possibly as a fighter or recruiter. Davis also went by the pseudonyms Abdul Wakil Khalil and Abu Hurairah Al Amreekee, reports The Associated Press.

After Davis tried contacting militants over social media, the FBI spent more than a year tracking his attempts to join the Islamic State. He traveled from his hometown of Augusta to the Atlanta airport, where he was arrested for parole violation and has remained in custody.

Davis has a history of criminal activity. He was imprisoned in 2005 for cocaine trafficking and released in 2008. He was imprisoned again in 2012 for another year, according to The Associated Press.

Davis faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for supporting a foreign terrorist organization
