A new poll found that 56 percent of American voters would support a Supreme Court decision to make gay marriage a Constitutional right while only 38 percent would oppose it.
The Quinnipiac University poll found that Democrats would support legalization 70 – 24 percent, independent voters 61 – 34 percent, while Republicans would oppose it 62 – 34 percent.
Gender makes a slight difference on the question, with men supporting it 55 – 41 percent and women supporting it at 57 – 35 percent.
The Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling on Obergefell v. Hodges, a case that could legalize gay marriage nationwide, by the end of June.
The majority of voters, 57-36 percent, say states should be forced to recognize same-sex marriages from other states that allow it.
The poll also found that the majority of American voters disapprove of the job President Barack Obama is doing and believe we are losing the war against ISIS.
Fifty percent of American voters disapprove of the job President Barack Obama is doing, up from 49 percent found in an April Quinnipiac poll.
On top of that, 64 percent of American voters believe the U.S. and it’s allies are losing the war against ISIS.
Congress didn’t escape the voters’ scrutiny either, with 61 percent saying the disapprove of the job Congressional Democrats are doing and 73 percent saying they disapprove of the job Congressional Republicans are doing.
The poll also queried voters on their feelings about the death penalty. It found that 43 percent of American voters support the death penalty for convicted murderers, while 48 percent support life without parole.
In the case of Boston Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was sentenced to death by a jury in May, 62 percent of voters agree he should be executed while 34 percent support life without parole.
“American voters may be moving away from the death penalty in general, but there is absolutely no ambivalence when it comes to executing convicted Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev,” Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement.
