An off-duty police officer from Washington, D.C. was shot early Monday outside a strip club in a suburb of Detroit, Mich.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was sitting in a car with his brother-in-law at a traffic light after leaving the club when a car pulled up beside them and the driver fired into the car, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The police officer and his brother-in-law were both shot, but not fatally, and were able to drive themselves to a Detroit Police Department precinct station. They were then transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The shooters yelled something at the two men before shooting at them, but police have yet to identify a motive in the incident and they don’t know what was said, according to The Washington Post

The D.C. officer was not armed at the time of the shooting and was in Detroit for a family gathering.

The shooting came just hours after law enforcement officials announced a new effort to curb gun violence in the city, which averages around two and a half shootings a day.

At a press conference organized by Detroit One, a partnership of state, local and federal police, the city’s mayor, Mike Duggan, said he wants to make stiffer penalties for people who use guns during crimes.

“As everybody knows, gun violence in the city of Detroit is at an unacceptable level,” Duggan said. “It’s going to take hard work and a collaborative effort to bring that down. Every month that goes by we are going to make it more and more difficult to get away with a crime using a gun.”

Detroit has seen between 1,400 and 1,600 shootings each of the past three years, and before that it ranked second only to Flint, Mich. in the number of annual murders, averaging 54.6.
