Police say an off-duty New York prison guard fatally shot a would-be motorcycle thief Saturday night.

Authorities say the alleged robber walked over to a group of bikers outside a motorcycle club, pointed a gun at them, and demanded they hand over the keys to their motorcycles, WABC reports.

Alfredo Perez, the off-duty prison guard, allegedly shot the robber in the head. The man was later pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

The man shot had been arrested over 50 times. Perez is a Queensboro Correctional Facility corrections officer in Long Island City.

Police are still investigating the incident.
