A North Carolina man has been charged with trying to help ISIS.

Justin Nojan Sullivan, 19, was charged Monday with attempting to provide material support to ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization.

The FBI alleges that they found out Sullivan planned to purchase a semi-automatic AR-15 at a June 20 gun show in North Carolina and then use the weapon to commit mass murder in the name of ISIS.

An undercover FBI agent reached out to Sullivan June 6 and began communicating with him. Sullivan allegedly described himself as “a mujahid,” and offered to help the FBI agent join what he described as the Islamic State in North America.

Sullivan allegedly told the agent “the war is here,” and planned to carry out a “minor assassination” as practice before the major attack. Sullivan allegedly had several conversations with the FBI agent planning and discussing the attack.

Authorities arrested Sullivan Friday, the day before he allegedly planned to buy the weapon. They say they found a silencer that Sullivan had obtained for the attack.

“Justin Sullivan intended to commit violent acts against innocent people in the U.S. to support the terrorist organization, ISIL,” Special Agent in Charge John A. Strong said in a statement. “As demonstrated in this case federal, state, and local law enforcement will work tirelessly to protect our communities from those who plot to carry out terrorist activities of any kind.”
